The Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command of the Ghana Navy, Commodore Samuel Ayelazono, engaged fisherfolk from the Central and Western Regions at the Command's Headquarters on Thursday, 5 March 2026, to strengthen cooperation and improve maritime safety.
In his remarks, the FOC thanked the fishermen for attending and encouraged them to provide accurate and timely information to security agencies. He reaffirmed the Ghana Navy’s commitment to collaborating with fishing communities to enhance safety and security within Ghana’s maritime domain.The Commanding Officer, Naval Base Sekondi, Commander Charles Darkwah, acting as the Command Operations Officer (COO), outlined measures to improve safety at sea, including increasing situational awareness, encouraging fishermen to operate in groups, reporting incidents promptly, monitoring unusual vessel movements, and strengthening communication and information sharing with maritime security authorities.Personnel from the Ghana Police Service Marine Unit, Fisheries Commission and Ghana Maritime Authority also advised fishermen on safety, designated fishing routes, and the use of approved fishing methods to promote sustainable practices.During the discussions, fishermen raised safety concerns, fear of retaliation when sharing information, and alleged incursions by foreign fishermen. They also suggested community rescue boats and regular patrols. The Flag Officer Fleet, Naval Captain John Bekuin-Wurapa, attended the meeting.
