The School of Maritime Engineering and Combat Systems (SMECS) has held a closing ceremony for Engineering Mechanic Qualifying Course 1-2026 at Naval Base Sekondi on Friday, 17 July 2026.
The 17-week course, attended predominantly by junior ratings, was designed to equip participants with technical knowledge and practical skills in areas such as Internal Combustion Systems, Distillation and Reverse Osmosis Systems, and Compressor Systems. The training formed part of the Ghana Navy's continuous efforts to enhance the professional competence and operational readiness of its personnel.
In his remarks, the Commanding Officer of SMECS, Commander Michael Nyarko, commended the trainees for their resilience, commitment, and hard work throughout the course. He noted that the ceremony was not merely a formality but a recognition that the participants had successfully met the demanding standards of the programme.
Commander Nyarko emphasised that technical training remained the silent authority underpinning every naval operation, stressing that the sea was unforgiving and therefore required personnel who were disciplined, competent, and resilient. He urged them to lead through competence, integrity, and exemplary conduct, as junior personnel would look up to them for guidance and inspiration.
The Chief Instructor of the course, Chief Petty Officer Class One (CPOI) Osei Joseph, described the event as a significant milestone in the careers of the trainees. He stated that the intensive training had sharpened their intellect and strengthened their character, urging them to remain focused and committed to their mandate of serving the nation with pride and professionalism.
At the end of the course, Leading Seaman (LS) Dassah Justice emerged as the overall best trainee, while LS Quayson Emmanuel placed second and LS Abdul Aziz Abdul Basit secured third position. In appreciation of the training received, the course leader, LS Dassah Justice, presented a slasher machine to SMECS on behalf of the course participants.
