The Ghana Navy and Ghana Space Science and Technology Institute (GSSTI) have initiated discussions on leveraging space-based technologies to strengthen maritime surveillance, enhance intelligence gathering, and improve national security.
The initiative follows a courtesy call on the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, by a GSSTI delegation led by its Director, Dr Joseph Tandoh, at the Naval Headquarters on Tuesday 27 October 2026. The visit also sought to invite the CNS to the upcoming Ghana Space Conference 2026.
As part of the proposed collaboration, the Ghana Navy has been invited to participate in a panel discussion on the application of space technology in enhancing maritime domain awareness and operational readiness.
The CNS highlighted the strategic importance of space technology in modernising the Ghana Armed Forces, particularly in monitoring Ghana’s territorial waters and supporting efforts to address emerging security threats, including terrorism.
Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to exploring joint initiatives that bridge scientific research and military operations to strengthen Ghana’s maritime and national security.
