The Commanding Officer of the School of Marine Engineering and Combat Systems (SMECS), Commander Michael Kofi Nyarko, has called for stronger collaboration between Mantrac Component and Rebuild Centre and the Ghana Navy to enhance the professional development of naval engineering personnel.
He made the call when a group of 15 students undertaking the Engine Mechanics Specialist Qualification Course (EM 1-2026) at the Western Naval Command paid an industrial visit to the Mantrac Component and Rebuild Centre (CRC) in Takoradi on Wednesday, 10 June 2026.
The visit was part of SMECS' practical training programme, which aimed to expose students to modern engineering practices and maintenance procedures in the industrial sector.
The delegation, led by Commander Michael Kofi Nyarko, was warmly received by the CRC Operations Manager, Mr Abirrial Guillaume, who welcomed the team and provided an overview of Mantrac's operations and services. Before the commencement of activities, the Health and Safety Officer, Mr Richmond Kwame, conducted a comprehensive safety briefing to ensure adherence to safety protocols throughout the visit.
The students subsequently participated in a series of technical presentations facilitated by the Training Manager, Mr Abraham Gyesie, who took them through key areas, including maintenance procedures, machine systems, powertrain operations, hydraulics, engine systems, and electrical and electronic equipment management.
The tour continued through various sections of the facility, including the Machine Shop, Soft Strip Bay, Engine Strip Bay, Engine Cleaning Bay, and Engine Detailing Bay, where they observed practical maintenance, overhaul and rebuilding processes.
Speaking at the end of the visit, Commander Michael Kofi Nyarko expressed appreciation to the management and staff of Mantrac for their warm reception, hospitality, and willingness to share their expertise with the students. He noted that such engagements provide invaluable practical exposure that complements classroom instruction and contributes significantly to the development of competent engineering personnel.
