The Naval Recruit Training School (NRTS) officially opened its 5-day Inter-Division Novices Boxing Competition on Monday 27 July 2026, at the NAVTRAC Parade Square, Nutekpor.The competition formed part of the recruits' military training programme and is aimed at developing physical fitness, mental resilience, courage, discipline, and self-confidence among recruits. It also provides a platform for participants to demonstrate the boxing skills acquired during training while fostering sportsmanship and healthy competition among the divisions.
As part of the opening ceremony, the School dedicated its newly acquired boxing ring, which will serve as a training and competition facility for recruits and personnel of the Command. The acquisition of the ring marks a significant step in enhancing sports development and combat training at NAVTRAC.
Addressing the gathering, the Guest of Honour and Training Coordinator, Naval Captain David Dela Kpetigo, commended the Naval Recruit Training School for incorporating competitive sports into its training programme. He noted that boxing develops courage, resilience, discipline, and mental toughness, qualities that are essential to every military professional. He urged the recruits to compete with determination, uphold the highest standards of sportsmanship, and respect the rules of the competition, adding that the true measure of success lies not only in victory but also in character, discipline, and teamwork.
The competition will feature recruits from the various divisions competing in different weight categories over the 5-day period. It will culminate into the presentation of medals and trophies to outstanding boxers and winning divisions in recognition of their performance throughout the competition.
