The Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC) has held an opening ceremony to commence the Ghana Navy Boat Operators Training Course on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, at the School of Maritime Operations (SMOPS) Auditorium, Nutekpor.
The two-week training, conducted under the auspices of the Support to West Africa Integrated Maritime Security (SWAIMS) Project, is aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities of Ghana Navy personnel by equipping them with the knowledge and practical skills required for the safe and effective operation of military boats. The course also seeks to improve participants’ competence in boat handling, navigation, seamanship, maritime safety, and operational procedures in support of maritime security operations.
In his opening remarks, the Lead Instructor, Captain Rui-Filipe, welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of the course in developing competent and confident boat operators capable of meeting the demands of contemporary maritime operations. He encouraged participants to approach the training with commitment, discipline, and an open mind, stressing that active participation and the sharing of experiences would enrich the learning process and contribute to safer and more effective boat operations.
Addressing the participants, the Guest of Honour and Training Coordinator of NAVTRAC, Naval Captain David Dela Kpetigo, underscored the significance of the training in strengthening the operational readiness of the Ghana Navy. He noted that the maritime environment presents dynamic challenges that require well-trained and highly skilled personnel capable of operating safely and effectively under all conditions. He therefore urged participants to make the most of the opportunity by remaining disciplined, demonstrating professionalism, and applying the knowledge and practical skills acquired to enhance operations within their respective units.
The Ghana Navy Boat Operators Training Course forms part of NAVTRAC’s continuous efforts, in partnership with the SWAIMS Project, to build maritime security capacity and enhance the operational effectiveness of the Ghana Navy through specialised training programmes.
