Ghana Navy and European Union (EU) Support to West Africa Integrated Maritime Security (SWAIMS) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening maritime security cooperation.The reaffirmation was conveyed during a meeting between the Project General Coordinator, Commodore Antonio Rodrigues, and the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, at the Naval Headquarters on Monday 3 August 2026.
The SWAIMS project, supported by the EU, seeks to improve maritime safety, combat piracy and illegal fishing, and strengthen cooperation among West Africa's coastal states through training and capacity-building initiatives.
Commodore Rodrigues commended the Ghana Navy for its professionalism, expertise, and commitment to military training, describing the relationship between the Navy and EU as a valuable partnership in advancing maritime security cooperation and promoting stability in the Gulf of Guinea.
The CNS expressed appreciation to the EU for its continued support while acknowledging the strong bilateral relations between Ghana and Portugal. He indicated that the resources and training provided would further enhance Ghana Navy's operational capacity and strengthen its readiness to safeguard Ghana's maritime domain.
